An Unshakable Connection

Focus: 1 Thessalonians 5:10 (KJV): "Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him." 

Believers need not be worried about their Christian loved ones who had already passed away, fearing they might miss out on the glorious return of Christ. we are comforted by our focus that our relationship with Jesus does not depend on our physical state. Therein, "wake" refers to being alive on earth, and "sleep" is the biblical metaphor for physical death. Because Christ already endured the ultimate penalty of death for us, the heavy lifting of our salvation is finished. Consequently, whether we are alive when Christ returns or lying in a grave, our status is exactly the same: we are entirely secure, and we are destined to live together with Him. Death is no longer a barrier; it is merely a transition.

The criminal that was crucified to die with Christ was being justly executed for his crimes. He was hanging on a cross, staring physical death directly in the face. He knew that his time on earth was hours away from ending—he was about to "sleep." In his final moments, he looked over at Jesus and made a simple request of faith: "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom". He recognized Jesus as King, even in His suffering. Jesus did not tell the thief that he had to wait in a dark, unconscious void until the resurrection, nor did He say death would separate them. Jesus responded instantly: "Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise". The thief's body was about to "sleep" in a grave, but his spirit was destined to immediately "live together with him." His physical death could not abort, delay, or destroy the promise of eternal fellowship with Jesus.

If you experience anxiety about dying or losing loved ones who know the Lord, meditate on the phrase "live together with him." Remind yourself that for the believer, death is not a final destination, but a doorway to Christ's immediate presence. Because your ultimate home is with Christ, do not grip the material things of this world too tightly. Live today with the joyful confidence that your most vibrant, eternal life is still ahead of you. Use this truth to encourage someone who has recently lost a Christian family member or friend. Remind them that their loved one is not missing out; they are actively living together with Him right now.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I thank you that you died for me so that my eternal destiny could be forever secure. Thank you that the power of your sacrifice has stripped death of its sting. Whether I live to see your glorious return or close my eyes in death before that day, I praise you that my future remains exactly the same—I will live together with you. Deliver my heart from the fear of the grave, and let this beautiful assurance fill me with peace and courage today, in Jesus' name, Amen.
