Focus: Colossians 3:12-13 - KJV
12. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13. Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
Galatians 5:22-26
The word of God which is forever settled, says, when a man is born again, he is a new creature; old things have passed away, and, behold, all things have become new. This means a person that is born again is a new man. He has shed the old self to take on newness by imbibing the Spirit of Christ, through whom his rebirth became possible. To understand this, we need to look at the life of a baby prior to birth and after. When in the womb, the child gets accustomed to eating, breathing and doing everything through his navel attached to the mother. In the womb, it is susceptible to all manner of treatment depending on the mother. However, once born, he starts to eat through his mouth, breath through his nose and make sounds which he could not make audibly in the womb.
When a man is born again, like a child detached from the mother’s womb, he is expected to be detached completely from the old life to which he was accustomed, before his new birth. For instance, if he had been a thief before, he should be able to live among people and be trusted with the chattels of others, without them missing. If a whoremonger, he should be able to stay without looking lustfully at others’ spouses. Like the new baby, he may poo at times on the mother; but the mother through proper guidance, guides him out of that, by verbal training. In the same manner, through the sincere milk of the word of God, the new man is nurtured to drop filthy ways and live in holiness as depicts the place into which he is born. In simple terms, he is to start exhibiting the character of Christ, which is found in the fruit of the Spirit.
Beloved, the character of the new man is found in bowels of mercies, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, faith and most of all, the heart of forgiveness. Except we have the character to forgive, we do not exhibit the Christ-likeness of the new man. For, those who are forgiven ought also to forgive others. What God has forgiven us of, is much more than anything we are called to forgive others of. Hence, if we fail to be forgiving, then do we fail in character and our newness is brought to question. Today, as this month comes to an end, the Lord is enjoining us to search our beings and see whether we are true to character as people born of God. There is room to learn not to poo on the body anymore, if we will allow the Holy Spirit to work on us through the word of God.
SOLUTION: Meditate always on the word of God, and allow it to form your character. Never close your mind to it even when it appears to chasten you sore. Except your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and the pharisees, you cannot be counted worthy of the Kingdom. Be of Christ-like character.
Pray thus, please: My father and my God, I thank you for bringing salvation my way and giving me a new birth. You that started a good work in me through salvation, please see it to perfection by making me to come to ultimate salvation in Jesus’ name. Let your word form in me the fruit of the Spirit and make it manifest in Christ-like character for me through and through, in Jesus’ name.
