Reverencing God Brings Longevity

Focus:

"The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened." – Proverbs 10:27 (KJV)

In our modern world, we spend a lot of time and money trying to "prolong our days" through diets, exercise, and medicine. While caring for our bodies is good stewardship, Solomon points us to a spiritual foundation for longevity: The Fear of the Lord. To "fear the Lord" isn't to live in a state of terror. Rather, it is a deep, abiding reverence and awe for who God is. It is a respect that leads to obedience. When we walk in the fear of the Lord, we naturally avoid the destructive paths that "shorten" life—paths of stress, bitterness, addiction, and reckless living. Living by God’s design keeps us away from the "snares of death." His wisdom acts as a guardrail, protecting us from the self-inflicted wounds of a wicked or careless life. Prolonging days isn't just about adding more years to our lives; it’s about adding more life to our years. A life centered on God is filled with the peace and purpose that make every day count.

The "wicked" may seem to flourish for a moment, but their foundation is sand. The person who honors God builds their life on an eternal Rock, ensuring that their days are significant, sustained, and ultimately secure in His hands. Haman was wicked. He sought to destroy the Jews and Mordecai out of wickedness and lack of the fear of God. But Mordecai feared God and honored His Word. In the end, the wicked man’s life ended abruptly on the gallows he prepared for the one who feared the Lord, whilst the one he sought to kill was eventually promoted in a big way by the king.

The Lord is saying to us today that choosing God’s way reduces the "friction" of sin that wears down our physical and spiritual health. Long life is a by-product of a right relationship with the Creator. And, while our focus scripture speaks of physical days, it also reminds us that those who fear the Lord have the promise of eternal days in His presence. Let us take an inventory of our daily habits. Is there a "wicked" habit—perhaps a spirit of worry, a lack of rest, or a specific sin—that is draining your life and health? Commit to replacing that habit with a spiritual discipline that honors God.

How can you show reverence for God in the small decisions you make throughout your day today?

Prayer

Lord, I thank you that you are the Giver and Sustainer of life. I ask for a heart that truly reveres you. Help me to walk in your wisdom today, making choices that honor my body and my spirit. Remove any desire in me to follow the paths of the world that lead to destruction. I trust you with the number of my days, and I pray that each one would be lived to your glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Please share. God bless you.
