Key verse: Psalms 18:2
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
Psalms 125:1-3
Cities that are surrounded by rocks or mountains in ancient times were said to be fortified cities. The inhabitants of such cities being conversant with the terrain, knew how to hide themselves in the fortification supplied by the rocks such that when the enemies came to assail them, they were well hidden from their assailants. They were also able to launch attack against the enemy from their fortresses. The Lord provides greater cover than such ordinary rocks. The Psalmist in describing such cover, likens it to the mountains surrounding Jerusalem and thereby fortifying it. The Lord so fortifies those who hide in Him. On the other hand, there are those who place their trust and fortification in other media which are less strong and often fail. For instance, the Philistines relied on a human champion to fortify them against the Israeli army. Their champion was undone by a mere shepherd lad who was a novice at war. Egypt relied on chariots, horses and men but they all perished in the Red Sea. They that make the Lord their fortress are always victorious.
Before choosing our fortress, it is important to check the credentials of the ones available to us. Putting trust in entities who are not able to defend themselves when the chips are down; or trusting those who are equally expendable is a great mistake. But to put trust or reliance on God who is the Ultimate in ALL things is the most significant. The defeat of Goliath by David was made possible because He had the Lord who is the Lord of Hosts as his Fortress. He overcame the Amalekites who raided his camp and made away with his wives juss because he trusted the words of the Lord, his Fortress. We are greater than David in that this dispensation of ours even David wanted it but didn’t get it. We can therefore trust God better than David and have Him see us through our battles as our Rock and Fortress. As powerful as Saul was as king in Israel, he could not find or undo David because David was fortified.
Who is challenging your wellbeing and wanting to mess with your destiny? Why not place your trust in the Lord who is your Rock and Fortress who will not allow the scepter of the wicked rise above your head if you be righteous. The Lord will keep you in safety.
Pray: Father, please keep me fortified in you against the attack of the enemy in Jesus name.
