The Direction of Your Heart

"My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up." — Psalm 5:3 (KJV)

Many of us start our day with prayer, but have we ever stopped to consider where those prayers are actually headed? It’s easy to assume that because we are speaking "to" God, our requests are aligned with His heart. However, the true direction of our prayer is determined by its content. God is the giver of life, not the author of destruction. When we use our prayer time to ask for the downfall or destruction of others, we are no longer aligning ourselves with the Father's ministry of reconciliation. Instead, we inadvertently align our requests with the one whose business is to steal, kill, and destroy.

Consider the prophet Elijah. He stood boldly for God, turning the hearts of Israel back to their true Creator. Yet, in a moment of judgment, he chose to destroy those who might have otherwise been converted to the living God. When our prayers move away from love and toward vengeance, they become "antithetical" to God's nature. To truly "look up" to Him, our focus must be on righteousness, peace, and joy—the hallmarks of His Kingdom.

Check the "inventory" of your heart this morning. Are you looking to God to settle scores, or to manifest His Kingdom? Stop looking for help to destroy your perceived enemies; He has already commanded you to pray for them. When you focus on love, you ensure your prayers are God-centered, and He is always poised to hear a heart that mirrors His own.

Prayer

Father, I love You because You always hear me. Thank You for listening to my voice this morning. Today, I ask that You provide my daily bread without stress. I pray that You would cause even my enemies to be at peace with me. As I look up to You each morning, I trust You for prompt answers to my requests. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
