A Spectacle Of Grace

Focus: Psalm 71:7 (KJV): "I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge."

When a believer endures extraordinary trials with unwavering faith, their life becomes a striking, public marvel to others—but the secret behind their resilience is entirely found in the hidden protection of God. King David wrote this psalm in his old age, looking back on a life packed with intense warfare, public betrayal, and crushing hardships. To the casual observer, David’s life was an astonishing puzzle. People looked at him and wondered how one human being could survive so many assassination attempts, family heartbreaks, and political upheavals without completely losing his mind or his faith. He was a walking miracle. David wasn't a superhero; he was just an ordinary man who consistently ran into an extraordinary God whenever the storms of life hit.

For a better insight, Job was a wealthy, righteous man who lost absolutely everything in a single day—his children, his wealth, and his status. Shortly after, his physical health collapsed, leaving him covered from head to toe in painful, agonizing boils. He became a literal "wonder" to his community. His wife told him to curse God and die. His three closest friends sat in silence for seven days, completely paralyzed and horrified by the sheer scale of his destruction. Passersby looked at this ruined man scraping his sores in the ash heap and used him as a cautionary tale. He was a public spectacle of misery. Despite his deep confusion and intense grief, Job stubbornly refused to abandon his faith. He ran directly to God as his refuge, declaring, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him", and boldly proclaiming, "I know that my redeemer liveth.” Because he anchored himself in his strong refuge, the enemy could not destroy him. God broke the siege over Job's life, rebuked his critics, and turned his story completely around—restoring to him twice as much as he had before.

If you are currently going through a crisis and feel like everyone is watching you fail or struggle, stop trying to look strong for the crowd. Run into your secret prayer closet and make God your "strong refuge" today. Remember that the world is watching how you react to pressure, bad news, and disappointment. When you choose joy, peace, and integrity in the middle of a hardship, your survival becomes a beautiful puzzle that points people to Jesus. Do not let a temporary season of suffering define you. Like David and Job, hold your ground in faith, knowing that the God who protects you in the storm will eventually use your testimony to display His wonders.

Prayer

Lord God, I thank you that you are my unshakeable hiding place when the world around me crumbles. Forgive me for trying to fight my battles in my own strength or worrying about what others think of my struggles. I make you my strong refuge today. When the enemy expects me to break, let your peace and strength hold me together. Make my life a living wonder of your grace, so that everyone who watches my journey will ultimately have to give glory to your saving power, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Please share. God bless you.
