The Danger of Spiritual Amnesia

Focus: Psalms 9:17 (KJV) states: "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God."
Both individuals and whole societies face inevitable judgment when they willfully push God out of their minds and cultures. It is easy to associate "the wicked" only with those who commit horrific crimes. However, the psalmist pairs wickedness directly with a quiet, creeping sin: forgetting God. This does not mean a simple slip of the memory. It means a deliberate choice to ignore God's laws, disregard His past faithfulness, and live as if He does not exist. When a person or a nation suffers from this spiritual amnesia, they lose their moral compass. Our focus warns that the ultimate destination of this path is "hell" (Sheol)—a place of permanent separation from God's presence, grace, and light.
Nebuchadnezzar was given immense power, wealth, and victory by God's sovereign hand. Yet, he chose to completely forget the true Source of his success. One evening, walking on the roof of his palace, his pride overflowed. He declared, "Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?" (Daniel 4:30). He deliberately erased God from his achievements. While the words were still in the king’s mouth, judgment fell. He was instantly driven from human society, lost his sanity, and lived like a wild beast in the fields. Nebuchadnezzar experienced a living hell of isolation and degradation because he forgot God. The story only changed when Nebuchadnezzar lifted his eyes to heaven and finally remembered the Most High. God instantly restored his sanity and his kingdom once he acknowledged that heaven rules.
Today, write down three distinct times God answered a prayer, provided for you, or delivered you from trouble. Review this list regularly so your heart remains anchored in gratitude. Identify areas in your life where you are acting as if you are the sole author of your success (e.g., your career, your finances, or your family). Consciously hand the credit and control back to God. Nations are made of individuals. Pray for a spiritual awakening in your community, asking God to turn the hearts of leaders and citizens back toward biblical truth.
Prayer
Lord God, forgive me for the times I enjoyed your blessings but completely forget you, the Giver. Break any pride in me that claims credit for what your grace has provided. Deliver my heart from spiritual forgetfulness and keep me fully aware of your presence today. I pray also for my nation; please open our eyes to our need for you so that we do not walk the path of destruction, in Jesus' name, Amen.
Please share. God bless you.
