The Order of Surrender

Focus: 2 Corinthians 8:5 (KJV): "And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God."
God does not want your material possessions until He first has your heart. The extraordinary generosity of the Macedonian believers wanting to support Paul financially despite their own lack, didn't happen because they were rich or because they were emotionally manipulated. It happened because of a specific order of spiritual surrender. They didn't just give money; "first they gave their own selves to the Lord." When we give ourself completely to God, our wallet, time, talents, and comfort naturally follow. We stop viewing giving as an obligation or a loss, and we begin to view it as a natural reflex of being completely owned by Jesus.
Hannah was a woman carrying deep emotional pain. She was barren, and her husband's second wife constantly mocked her for it. Year after year, Hannah wept and fasted at the tabernacle in Shiloh, carrying a heavy burden of sorrow. In her deepest moment of despair, Hannah made a vow to the Lord. Before God ever gave her a child, Hannah completely surrendered her own desires, her future, and her identity to God's will. She gave herself over to His sovereignty. God answered Hannah's prayer and gave her a son named Samuel. Because her heart was already totally surrendered to the Lord, she did not hold back her offering when the time came. As soon as the boy was weaned, she packed his things, traveled back to the tabernacle, and handed her only child over to Eli the priest to serve God forever. She proved that when you first give your own self to God, giving up your most treasured blessings for His purpose becomes an act of pure worship.
Before you give your money to a ministry, your time to a volunteer project, or your energy to a church program today, pause and pray. Intentionally surrender your mind, your will, and your body to Jesus first. Are you giving or serving out of guilt, or because you want people to notice how religious you are? Let the Holy Spirit realign your heart so that your giving flows entirely from the fact that you belong to Him. Identify the thing in your life that you are holding onto most tightly (e.g., your career control, your kids' future, or a financial security blanket). Consciously place it in God's hands today, trusting that He is the absolute best caretaker of what belongs to Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I recognize that you do not simply want my external religious service or my money; you want all of me. Forgive me for the times I have tried to give you a cheap token offering while keeping control over my own life. Today, I follow the example of the Macedonian believers and Hannah. I first give my own self to you. Take my heart, my mind, my wallet, and my future. Use me according to your will, and let my generosity toward others be a natural reflection of my total surrender to you, in Jesus' name, Amen.
Please share. God bless you.
