Happy New Month and welcome to the second half of the year. The reality of a person’s spiritual life is not proven by their words, titles, or public performance, but by the visible, lasting results of their character and conduct. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns His followers to beware of false prophets who dress up like sheep but are inwardly dangerous wolves. He gives us a foolproof spiritual test to see through any disguise: look at the fruit. An apple tree does not need to announce that it is an apple tree; it simply produces apples. In the same way, a true follower of Christ will naturally produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit. One can fake a spiritual vocabulary, and mimic a religious routine, but cannot fake long-term, consistent spiritual fruit. Our actions will always reveal the true condition of our heart.
Simon the sorcerer heard the gospel preached, professed belief, and was even baptized. Outwardly, he looked like a new convert. However, his true fruit quickly exposed his unchanged heart. When he saw the Apostles laying hands on people to receive the Holy Spirit, Simon offered them money, saying, "Give me also this power.” He didn't want holiness; he wanted power and attention. Peter immediately exposed his bad fruit, telling him his heart was not right with God and that he was trapped in bitterness and sin. Conversely, a man named Joseph became a pillar in the early church. He didn't just talk about love; he sold his land and gave the money to help the poor. When the feared persecutor Saul (Paul) claimed to be converted, everyone was afraid of him except Joseph. Joseph risked his life to welcome Paul, encourage him, and introduce him to the apostles. Because of his consistent fruit of generosity, kindness, and faith, the apostles renamed him Barnabas, which means "Son of Consolation." The Bible says this of him: "For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith."
As we journey into the second half of the year, take an honest look at your life over the past week. What kind of fruit are you producing in your private life, your marriage, or your workplace? Are you growing fruits of patience and kindness, or thorns of anger and complaints? Stop trying to look religious or impressive to the people around you. Focus your energy on staying connected to Jesus through prayer, because a branch can only produce good fruit if it stays connected to the Vine. Be wise about who you allow to influence your spiritual walk. Do not follow leaders or friends simply because they are charming, talented, or loud. Look closely at how they treat others and whether their daily lives honor God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have cared more about looking like a Christian than actually living like one. Cleanse my heart from any hypocrisy or hidden bad motives. I want my life to produce genuine, sweet, and lasting fruit that brings glory to your name. Help me to stay closely connected to Jesus today so that His love, joy, and peace will naturally flow through my actions, in Jesus' name, Amen.
Please share. God bless you.
