Focus:
"And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly." – 1 Corinthians 15:49 (KJV)
In our daily lives, we are constantly reminded of our "earthy" nature. We feel it in our tired muscles, our aging skin, and our susceptibility to sickness and sorrow. Like Adam, we are made of the dust of the earth, and we carry that physical identity everywhere we go. But the Apostle Paul gives us a glorious "but" in the story of humanity. Our focus scripture contains a promise of metamorphosis. Just as surely as we have lived in these fragile, earthly bodies, the day is coming when we will "bear the image of the heavenly." This means we will be made like Jesus in His glorified state. It means our character and our "spiritual bodies" will finally be perfectly aligned with His. The "earthy" image is subject to death and corruption. The "heavenly" image is eternal, vibrant, and indestructible. Our flaws, our scars, and the limitations of this world do not have the final say. Our true, final version is a heavenly one, crafted by God for eternity.
We are currently in the "seed" stage. A seed looks nothing like the flower it will become, yet the blueprint for the flower is already inside. Because of Christ’s resurrection, the blueprint for your heavenly glory is already secure. When we meet with Christ, we are going to see Him in the fullness of His glory and we will be as He is. It was that same glory that was overwhelmingly bright for the sight of Saul of Tarsus on the way to Damascus and blinded him. That same glory will be what Paul and every other will bear at the Lord’s appearing.
When your physical body fails or feels weak, remember it is temporary. It is only the "earthy" shell. Our hope isn't just in a "spirit" floating in clouds; it is in a transformed, glorified existence. Since we are destined to bear the heavenly image, we should begin reflecting heavenly values—love, joy, and peace—right now. Today, when you look in the mirror, don't just see the "earthy" version of yourself with its imperfections. Remind yourself: "I am a work in progress, destined for a heavenly image." Let this hope change how you treat your body and how you view your future. How does the promise of a heavenly body change the way you face your physical limitations today?
Prayer
Father, I thank you that this earthly life is not the end of my story. Thank you for the promise that I will one day bear the image of my Savior, Jesus Christ. When I feel the weight and the weariness of my physical body, help me to fix my eyes on the eternal glory that is to come. Thank you for the hope of the resurrection. Transform my heart today so that I might reflect a little bit of heaven to everyone I meet, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Please share. God bless you
