God Is Jealous

Focus

"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:"Exodus 34:14 (KJV)

Human jealousy is almost always rooted in insecurity, envy, and pride. But God’s jealousy is entirely different. His jealousy is pure, holy, and beautiful. It is not the jealousy of a bitter rival; it is the fierce, protective jealousy of a husband who loves his spouse too much to let her wander into danger. When God spoke these words to Moses, He was establishing a covenant. This verse reveals two profound truths about God's heart for you: God will not share your heart with anyone or anything else. He knows that whatever you worship—whether it is money, career, a relationship, or your own comfort—will eventually control and break you. He forbids false gods because only He can truly satisfy your soul. This is a breathtaking revelation. God does not just experience holy jealousy; His very character and name is Jealous. He is passionately committed to you. His love is so intense that He refuses to be a casual hobby or a Sunday-only priority in your life.

Throughout the life of the Biblical Israel, God showed how jealous He was for them. Indeed, at one of the confrontations with Pharaoh, He described Israel as His first born. And all through their journeys through the wilderness, He rebuked kings for their sakes, saying, touch not mine anointed and do my prophets no harm, by so saying referring to Israel. However, whenever Israel went awhoring, the Lord stood away from them and they fell prey to their enemies. This simply because He is Jealous and His eyes will not behold iniquity. This He did not to destroy them, but to get back their attention whenever they strayed from Him.

When you look at our focus verse, do not see a restrictive rule. See a passionate Creator who loves you with an unyielding intensity. He wants all of you because He gave all of Himself for you. An idol is anything that takes God’s rightful place at the center of your life. Ask yourself: What do I think about most when I have free time? What do I rely on for my security? If you find that something else (like social media approval, work, or a hobby) has crept into first place, intentionally step back from it today and give that time to prayer and Scripture.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I am amazed by the intensity of your love for me. Thank you that you care enough about our relationship to be jealous for my heart. Forgive me for the times I have allowed modern idols to take your place. I choose to tear down those altars today. Be the center of my thoughts, my desires, and my worship. You alone are my God, in Jesus' name, Amen

Please share. God bless you.
