Keep The Lamp Alight

Focus: Exodus 27:20 - KJV

20. And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.

Leviticus 24:1-4

God is Light and He wants His children to dwell and operate in the light. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Light, hence we are enjoined to ensure that, like the five wise virgins, we keep the oil in our lamp always in place and even maintain extra oil. For if the lamp should be allowed to go off for lack of oil, then like the five foolish virgins, such people will be left in the outer darkness amongst the dogs. Hence, for all good intents and purposes, we must ensure we keep our relationship with the Holy Spirit in great stead so as never to plunge into darkness. He is the oil for our lamp to light our paths.

The Old Testament events were captured as a pointer to a fulfilment in the New Testament. While in the Old, men concentrated on physical structures as monuments for the consecration and worship of God, in the New, God has inscribed His laws in our hearts and relate with us from there. Hence, in the Old, physical oil, symbol of the Holy Ghost must be kept by the people of Israel for the lamps to light up the tabernacle of the congregation continually and always; in the present day, we are to keep the Holy Ghost paramount in our hearts and keep His fire burning always in us to forestall the ingress of foul matters that can damage the soul.

The Lord is reiterating His position today about the ministry of His Spirit: that we should ensure we do not allow our hearts to lose any bit of Him so that our light may not go dim but be continually lit and burning to the glory of the name of the Lord. Let us therefore, with gladsome hearts invite the Holy Spirit to permanently indwell us and ensure we do nothing at all to grieve Him so that He may remain always resident in us that our light may so shine unto all men and never be put out.
