Living in the Present Tense

Focus:

"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:"Ephesians 5:8 (KJV)

Your past does not define your identity. In our focus for today, Apostle Paul uses incredibly sharp language to describe a believer's transformation. It is not that you were simply in darkness; he says you were darkness. Likewise, he does not just say you received light; he declares that you are light in the Lord. This total identity shift changes how we view our daily conduct in two distinct ways:

Firstly, the darkness is entirely in the past tense ("ye were sometimes"). The moment you accepted Christ, a permanent spiritual relocation took place. Your old nature, your past mistakes, and your former lifestyle belong to a version of you that no longer exists.

And, secondly, because your identity has changed, your behavior must follow suit ("walk as children of light"). Walking implies a daily, step-by-step progression. God does not demand perfection overnight, but He does require a daily direction that matches who you now are. Light shines, exposes truth, and warms others.

If you are struggling with guilt or falling back into old habits, remind yourself of this focus scripture. You are no longer a citizen of the dark. Your identity is secure in the Lord, and you have been given the full power to step out of the shadows and walk boldly in His brightness. Identify one "dark" habit, thought pattern, or reaction that belongs to your old life but is still trying to linger in your day. Actively replace it with a corresponding "light" behavior today. When the enemy tries to remind you of your past failures, declare Ephesians 5:8 out loud. Remind yourself that you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for pulling me completely out of the kingdom of darkness and placing me into your marvelous light. Forgive me for the moments I live beneath my true identity. Help me to remember who I am in Christ today. Give me the grace, strength, and courage to walk step-by-step as a child of light, reflecting your purity and love to everyone around me, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Please share. God bless you.
