Refrain From Evil

Focus: Psalms 119:101 - KJV

101. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

Proverbs 1:10-19

The way of evil is principally to steal, kill and destroy. When the wicked sets out to achieve his wickedness, his mind is primarily on what he would gain out of his wickedness and never countenance or get concerned about the effect of such wickedness on the lives of others. At times, the wicked knows that his actions would hurt others but he could not care less, for as long as such action brings him gain. This is completely a departure from the direct injunction of the Lord to love. That which is most horrible is that the wicked do not go into the act alone. They make effort to lure others into it with themselves. No wonder the wise man quipped, when sinners entice you, consent thou not.

David was so understanding about the ways of God and he made up his mind to keep his feet away from evil ways as a factor to keeping God’s word. God’s word to us all is love. No wonder God preferred him to his siblings and indeed the whole house of Israel. He had occasion to slaughter a perceived enemy but would not because it is not love to do so. He heard the testimony of the killers of Ishbosheth and his thoughts were that they were wicked to have killed the man in that manner, or at all. When in our selfish pursuit we do things that ends up hurting others, like stealing from the nation’s treasury or even the ministry’s till like Judas, we send others to early graves. Imagine if a few people will stop diverting the resources of a whole country to themselves and it is deployed into infrastructural development, then will mortality rate reduce and joy will be in society.

If only men will take time to first take account of the likely consequences of their intended action, perhaps they will be able to refrain from the evil they do. Those who do evil, are far from fulfilling the word of the Lord. Yes, it may appear to them like a blessing from heaven: but what manner of blessing is aimed at destroying innocent people in the end? Stifling people of funds with a view to making undue gains is wicked. Favoring those who do not qualify for a privilege with a view to getting some returns from them is crass evil. When an unqualified contractor is given a flyover project and someone dies as a result of some error made by the said contractor, what gain was ever made from such has become blood money. God is saying we should take our feet away from the evil way so as to fulfil love.

SOLUTION: First consider the impact of every action, while it is in the thought process, to determine whether it is worth an action to take. When it appears like a blessing but will cause someone else to be cheated, injured or destroyed, then it is not of God and should be discarded.

Please pray:

·      Give thanks to God for making you a recipient of this very solid but gentle instruction today

·      Ask God to please forgive you for actions that you had taken in the past which may appear destructive and wicked

·      Pray that the Lord would give you the fortitude to restitute as much as possible in places where you had been in error and considered wicked

·      Ask God to please help you to discern and take your feet away from wickedness going forward

·      Ask for your daily bread

If you are blessed by this post, kindly share with your contacts, as well as others, that they may be blessed also. Thank you and may God bless you abundantly as you do so, in Jesus’ name.
