Remember God’s past deeds

Focus: Psalms 77:11-12 - KJV

11. I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. 12. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.

Psalms 77:11-20

Bringing to mind God’s past deeds gives us a reassurance about the prowess of our God and therefore helps to shore up our faith when in despicable circumstances. What gave Abram so much credence today is that he recalled that God gave him a child in old age when no one thought it was possible and so, even if He took Isaac, He could give him another child again. That made him the father of faith. David recalled that it was not his fighting capacity that killed a lion and a bear. He reminded himself of this to shore up the faith to confront Goliath in battle. Israel failed to consider the plagues and wonders of God in Egypt; the pillar that abode with them through their journeys; the Red Sea experience and the defeat of kings with standard armies on their way. Hence, when they got the report of the size of the people living in the promised land, their hearts failed. If only they had recalled the might of their God who had never left them to peril! But what did the soldiers of Israel at the battle of the Philistines where Goliath boasted, do differently? They refused to bring up the memory of the past battles God had delivered them from, and shore up faith in Him that is able to save when called upon. They lost the opportunity to be acclaimed the winners of Goliath.

Today, the enemy, like Goliath may be dangling a seemingly big sword before your face. Look not to the stature of the Goliath or the size of his sword! Rather, recall when others like him had roared against you and somehow without your lifting a finger they were defeated. Seek therefore the face of the Lord like David did: proclaim His name over and above that of the present source of danger and you will surely have the victory.

SOLUTION: Remember today the battles of life that God had won for you in times past. Let it encourage you in the present battle. Lift your voice to the Lord your helper to come through for you in the present circumstance. Go forth with His name constantly in your mouth. The enemy cannot withstand that name.

Father, you are our help in ages past and you never failed us; today, the enemy has raised a battle against us that we know we cannot ordinarily confront; please arise in your power and give us victory like before in Jesus’ name. Put the enemy to shame in our affairs in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
