The Flourishing

Focus: Psalm 92:12-13 KJV - The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.

Palm trees thrive in the harsh desert heat because their roots dig incredibly deep to find underground water. When fierce desert storms hit, a palm tree can bend entirely to the ground without snapping, bouncing right back up when the storm passes. Also, cedars are massive, majestic evergreen trees known for their absolute strength, stability, and aromatic wood that naturally repels rot and insects. They grow steadily over centuries. The secret to this evergreen strength is being planted. Flourishing isn't about shifting with the wind or jumping from place to place. It requires anchoring our roots deeply into the house of the Lord by maintaining a committed, consistent lifestyle of worship, fellowship, and devotion to God.

Anna was married for only a few years before her husband tragically died. As a young widow in ancient Israel, she faced extreme social vulnerability, grief, and potential poverty. Like a palm tree hit by a desert storm, she could have snapped under the weight of bitterness or despair. Instead of abandoning her faith or wandering away, Anna anchored her life directly into God's presence. The Bible notes that she departed not from the temple, but served God with fasting and prayers night and day. For decades, she stayed planted in the house of the Lord. Because she remained rooted, her spiritual life didn't dry up or rot with age. She grew strong like a cedar. When the infant Jesus was brought into the temple by Mary and Joseph, God granted this faithful, planted woman the supernatural discernment to instantly recognize the Messiah. In the very season of life when most people are retired or spent, Anna was operating at her peak purpose. She bore rich spiritual fruit in her old age.

Friends, consistency in God's presence guarantees long-term fruitfulness. Life will bring heavy storms that threaten to break us, but if we choose to stay planted in our relationship with God through prayer, worship, and devotion, our roots will tap into a supernatural resource. We won't snap under pressure, we won't dry up in old age, and we will continually flourish exactly where God has placed us.

I thank you, Lord for the position you have kept me in. Please keep me rooted in you, no matter what the vagaries of life bring my way. Let me flourish to declare your glory among the heathen and keep me linked to the nutrients from you forever, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
