The Power of the Silent Tongue

Scripture Focus:

"He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction." — Proverbs 13:3 (KJV)

There is a profound safety in silence. To "keep" one's mouth is not just about avoiding lies; it is about the discipline of self-control. When we leave a thought unsaid, it remains within our power. Once a word is spoken, however, it belongs to the world. It can be twisted, misinterpreted, or used as a snare by those who wish us harm.

The Bible gives us sobering examples of this. Think of the messengers who brought news of King Saul’s death to David—expecting a reward, they instead met their end because of the way they spoke. In contrast, even Joab, a man of action, knew when to use a surrogate and a riddle rather than speak harsh truths directly to the King. They understood that the tongue can either be a bridge or a guillotine. Even in the life of Christ, we see this wisdom. When His enemies had no valid charges against Him, they used His own words to build a case for blasphemy. While Jesus spoke only the truth, His experience reminds us that the world is often looking for any reason to use our words against us.

Sometimes, the most spiritual thing you can do is say nothing at all. By guarding your lips, you are guarding your soul from unnecessary battles and "wasting time on people who deserve your silence."

  • Pause Before You Speak: Ask yourself: Is this necessary? Can this be used against me or others?

  • Value Silence: Recognize that you don't owe every person an answer or an opinion.

  • Protect Your Peace: Understand that self-restraint is a form of spiritual protection.

Prayer

Father, please help me to guard my mouth. Grant me the wisdom to recognize when silence is better than speech, so I may never be ensnared by unnecessary words. If I have created destructive paths for myself through my speech in the past, I ask for Your grace to dislodge those traps today. Help me to speak only what is helpful and true. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Please share. God bless you.
