The Weight of What We Know

Focus: James 4:17 (KJV)"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."

John 9:39-41

The Responsibility of Revelation

Knowledge is a gift, but it also carries a profound accountability. For many who have heard the Gospel, the ways of God are no longer a mystery; they are clearly understood. However, a tragic gap often exists between what we know and how we live. When we choose our own selfish interests over the known path of love for God and neighbor, we aren't just making a mistake—we are stepping into sin. To know the right thing and intentionally refuse to do it is the very definition of transgression.

The Danger of Spiritual Sight

Jesus addressed this directly with the religious leaders of His day. The Pharisees claimed to have great spiritual insight, yet they rejected the Truth standing right before them. Jesus told them that if they were truly "blind" (ignorant), they would have no sin, but because they claimed to "see" (understand), their sin remained. This principle applies to us today: the more we understand God’s instructions, the more obedience is required of us. We cannot hide our level of knowledge from a God who sees everything; He knows exactly what "good" we are capable of doing at any given moment.

Commitment to Consistent Goodness

Living for God means ensuring that our actions always match our understanding. Whether it is following simple societal rules or fulfilling deep spiritual injunctions, failing to do the good we know we should do is a failure of faith. We are called to be like Christ, of whom it was recorded that He went about doing good. Our goal should be to never let a moment pass where we withhold the good that is within our power to give.

Prayer

In the name of Jesus, I rebuke every spirit of error that would hinder you from doing the good you know you should do. May it be recorded of you, just as it was of Christ, that you are consistently about your Father's business because God is with you. Receive the grace to never weary in well-doing, and may your life be a true reflection of the Light you have received, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
