Don’t Be Cut Off

Focus: Romans 11:22 KJV - Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

There are two distinct sides to God's holy character that must be balanced in our understanding: His goodness (mercy, grace, and kindness) and His severity (uncompromising justice, holiness, and judgment). Using the analogy of an olive tree, Paul explains that the original branches (unbelieving Israel) were broken off due to pride and unbelief, while the wild branches (the Gentiles) were grafted in by grace. He issues a stark warning against spiritual arrogance: God’s grace is not something to take for granted or treat casually. We must "continue in his goodness" through ongoing faith and obedience. If we turn away into willful rebellion and unbelief, we will face His severe justice and be "cut off."

Saul started out with nothing but God's favor. He was an ordinary young man from the smallest tribe of Israel, yet God uniquely chose him, anointed him as king, gave him a new heart, and granted him massive military victories over Israel's enemies. Saul was a prime recipient of divine goodness and grace. As time went on, Saul grew prideful, self-reliant, and fiercely independent of God's commands. When told to wait for the prophet Samuel to offer a sacrifice, Saul grew impatient and presumed to do it himself. Later, when commanded to completely destroy the Amalekites, Saul flatly disobeyed by keeping the best livestock and sparing the enemy king for his own glory. He completely stopped continuing in God's goodness. Because Saul chose a lifestyle of chronic disobedience and rebellion, God's severe justice was executed. Saul was systematically "cut off" from his royal position, his dynasty was terminated, and the Spirit of God departed from him.

King Saul’s life reminds us that past blessings do not excuse present rebellion. God is infinitely good, patient, and kind, but He is also holy and just. We cannot use His grace as a license to walk in open disobedience. To stay positioned under God's favor, we must humble ourselves and consistently remain in a state of active faith, trust, and alignment with His Word. Please remain in God’s favor by being obedient to Him. May you not be cut off in Jesus’ name.

Thank you, Lord for grafting me into your blessed family out of a root of severity. Let my life be an example of obedience through and through to the glory of your name, so that I may continue to relish your goodness all through life and never be cut off, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
