11. For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
Proverbs 23:10-11
Our God is the father to the orphan and judge of the widow. They are seen as the lowly, or unfortunate, in society. It is true that in some cases, some with infidel fathers are less privileged than some orphans. In the eyes of heaven, the orphan requires greater protection for being fatherless. To this extent, the mighty God who is their redeemer stands in for them in that which they have lost as father. Hence, like a normal earthly father would protect or redeem his dear son from the wickedness of an oppressor, so will the Lord step up to redeem the orphan from the bondage of his oppressor. Anyone who therefore stands against the orphan stands against God, his redeemer.
Mephibosheth was an orphan when God laid it in the heart of king David to make him a cabinet minister despite being a lame man and grandson of a deceased wicked king. His servant had tricked him to stay behind and not follow the king in his flight from the face of Absalom. The king had released all he possessed to the said servant believing his wicked diatribe. But when the king eventually saw Mephibosheth at his return to the kingdom, he listened to him and rather than deal with him harshly as the servant had purposed, he dealt kindly with him. David was a wise man who knew that the redeemer of the orphan would never leave His child. Hence, David refused to pitch his tent against the Lord in dealing with Mephibosheth.
The Lord is saying to us today that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, and that, one of the easy ways to so fall is by maltreating an orphan whom He fathers. It is important therefore for every believer to be conscious of the fact that those who cater for the orphan do it on God’s behalf and that God will recompense. Let us therefore be intentional in seeking out orphans to bless for doing so puts us on the good side of the Lord to bless us in return.
