25. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
Luke 14:25-33
Glory be to God for bringing us to the very last day of the year. But going by the words of Christ, the best way for us to find and live our lives is to lose it for His sake. When we become over exacerbated about our lives to want to be all things without thinking about Christ and His kingdom, we are already losing or wasting such lives for nothing. To really gain our lives, we need to throw the life of selfishness out of the window, prioritize Christ and His kingdom in all things, and then He releases to us the glory over His own life such that our new lives begin to glow. Unless we so pick up our cross and forsake our old lives, we will lose the good life which ends in eternity for such a flimsy life which has no length of time in it.
Simon Peter had a life as a fisherman. But the same life was empty and unsuccessful. He encountered Christ and found that one can actually have a successful life. He began to follow Him, as if to say he had picked up his cross, lost his fisherman life to embrace that of the fisher of men. Down the line, after the crucifixion of Christ, our friend picked up his old life again, thereby abandoning the new and better life. Until Christ returned for him to redirect him, he held on to a worthless life which he would have lost forever. Once redirected, he jettisoned the fisherman life forever, lost it and found his life in a better bigger way as a fisher of men operating in glory and the authority of Christ.
As the year ends today, the Lord is saying the reason we appear to have been affected negatively in the outgoing year is because we have held on wrongly to the life we ought to have dropped. When we obey Him to let go of what we call life and embrace His own template of life by prioritizing His person and being, we will find life better and enjoy greater grace in Him. If we must enjoy and have better life in the new year, it is important for us to heed the position of Christ by letting go the old ways which do not profit us anything, and take up the new so that we may have a change and a better life which we are sure to have in eternity. The new year is spread before us: how do we take it, with the old life or bearing our cross and following Christ to embrace a better one?
