No More Froward Mouth

Focus: Proverbs 15:28 - KJV

28. The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Psalms 37:30-31

Whenever a righteous man speaks, it is ladened with wisdom in that the law of his Lord is in his heart. The law of his Lord is love. Hence, he refrains from saying things that are not loving. Whatever he would say that would hurt his fellow, he would rather not say; and if he must say it, he does so in a manner that is suiting to the recipient. The wicked is not so. His heart is filled with darkness and he releases harsh words that make him seen in his wicked ways and the porous nature of his heart. When some speak to others, they say things that push the recipient to suicidal thoughts. That is not righteous. To some others, it is to give counsel to destroy rather than to save or bring about reconciliation. Destruction is of the devil, but reconciliation flows from Christ.

Jesus is the power and the wisdom of God. When He encountered sinners, He condemned them not, but spoke suiting words to point them to the kingdom. He is our example. David had a friend and counselor named Ahithophel. There was a coup in David’s palace whereat Absalom, his son decided to topple him. Rather than stick with David, Ahithophel deflected to the side of Absalom. Meanwhile, this counselor was one whose counsel was always apt. But because he had entered into wickedness, Ahithophel did not put his heart to the law of God. He sought to hurt the king in battle, and gave counsel that would have destroyed David and his company. Alas, by some righteous means, his counsel was seen as foolishness by the opposing camp and he was disgraced thereat in his wickedness.

God is on the side of the righteous because he will always reflect on God’s position in his heart before bringing words out of his mouth. Whatever we will say that will hurt or cause hurt for anyone at all, should be avoided like a plague. It is foolhardy to engage the gear of the mouth before engaging that of the brain. Indeed, it brings much devastation to do so. Let us therefore be careful as vessels of God to always apply our hearts in righteousness so as never to speak wicked things out of our mouths. Test is: what will these words of mine achieve when spoken?
