Our All-Round Usefulness

Focus: Romans 12:11 KJV - Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

To be slothful means to be lazy, sluggish, or procrastinating. Business doesn't just mean a corporate career; it refers to our diligence, duties, and execution of whatever God has put in our hands. Believers should work with excellence and urgency. Also, the word "fervent" literally means to boil or bubble over with heat. Our spiritual lives should not be cold, lukewarm, or mechanical. We are called to possess an active, enthusiastic zeal for God. This provides the ultimate target for our hard work and passion. Every task, whether secular or sacred, is ultimately done as an act of worship to the Lord, Jesus Christ.

When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem to rebuild its broken walls, he faced an immense, overwhelming engineering task. He didn't waste a single day but organized the citizens into efficient teams, assigning specific sections of the wall to different families, and working tirelessly from sunrise until the stars came out. When enemies tried to distract him and halt the project, he proved his relentlessness, and ensured the completion of the wall. Nehemiah was not just a cold corporate manager; his spirit was on fire. When he first heard about the ruined state of Jerusalem, he wept, fasted, and prayed for days. When enemies threatened to attack, his zeal didn't fade. He armed the workers with swords and spears. His enthusiasm was infectious and kept the entire nation motivated. Being a high-ranking cupbearer to a pagan king, he knew how to operate in the secular world. Yet, he viewed his entire building project not as a political career move, but as direct service to the King of Kings. He continuously credited God for his success.

Today, the Lord wants us to realize that faith and hard work can go hand in hand. God does not want us to be so spiritually minded that we are lazy in our daily duties, nor does He want us to be so busy with work that our spirit grows cold. When you combine practical excellence ("not slothful") with a passionate heart ("fervent in spirit"), our daily labor becomes a powerful vehicle for serving the Lord. Let us therefore be fervent for the ultimate glory of our Lord even as we serve Him.

Prayer

Thank you, Lord for the grace to know and be attentive unto you, as well as the strength to be upright in our daily work. Please keep us in strength sound mind and excellent spirit so that we may use the totality of our beings to glorify your name in the service of your Kingdom for our eternal gain and glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen
