21. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
2 Kings 6:8-23
The ministry we have of Christ is that of reconciliation. Before appointing us into it, Christ knew the hearts of men to be desperately wicked. Hence, the wickedness of a man does not become a bar to the believer from doing good. In other words, the evil deed of any man is no license for the believer to repay with evil. Rather, he should repay the evil with good deeds so as to engender reconciliation. For all intents and purposes, the difference between a believer and a man who is still of the world is that, the one is recreated to do good, while evil is the meat of the other continually. So, when the believer reacts to the deeds of an evil doer as if it is strange, one should wonder what the believer was expecting. We are to do good to all men that our father in heaven may be praised thereby.
Elisha was a student of Elijah. Because the master did not know better, he roasted those he perceived did evil towards him and slaughtered others. coming out of pupilage, Elisha also devoured little children that called him bald headed just with a curse. But when he got to know better, a whole battalion of the Syrian army sought to arrest him and take him to their king for revealing the king’s secrets, (even the ones he discussed in his bedchambers) without having to be there. Rather than take the opportunity to slaughter or roast them when he heard it, Elisha led the army to a place where they themselves realized they should have been killed, and fed them there. He repaid them good for their evil and his acts caused them to be reconciled with Israel from then, and almost forever.
There are too many people who claim to be Christians but are not Christ-like at all. To be like Him, we are to mend the cut off ear of the soldier sent to discomfit us and not devour him. That is what Christ has called us into. And today, He is saying to us, why call me Lord, Lord and obey not my commands? It is important for us to relearn Christ’s attributes, imbibe them, and start putting them to practice. It cannot be right for us to carry the garb of Christianity and yet be full of venom towards them that despitefully use us. Let us take up therefore, the gauntlet of reconciling evil doers unto our God and their God by repaying them good for evil.
