Romans 15:4-6
God is righteous and promotes righteousness. Over the ages, man has lived on the earth from age to age without a clue on how to please the Lord. When the Lord choose Abram to bring forth a nation that will be a specimen of how mankind ought to relate with God on earth, it was by his believe and trust in God that he was counted to be righteous. From age to age, others lived before the Christ took human flesh and none was able to fulfil the requirement of righteousness. However, a little here and a little there, certain aspects of their lives gave examples unto us of how they were pleasing in part unto the Lord. So, their lives became examples unto those who have lived after of how to and how not to live if we must be pleasing unto God. Nonetheless, the life of Christ became a perfect example and precedent of how to relate with God perfectly and God Himself said so by commending Him to mankind as the perfect example. All of these acts were committed to writing that we may consider their actions as precedents for our learning so that we should observe and understand how God being Love would rather that we live together in truth, love and fearlessness as we glorify God for the life of Jesus Christ.
As we all have something to learn from and reflect upon, it becomes almost unimaginable that we fall into the same or similar errors as those who had been before us. Particularly, that we ought to draw credence from the life of Christ so as to live a pleasing life unto the Lord. We are to therefore learn and keep away from the mistakes of old even as we strive to be like the Christ fully in all that we do. Difficult? Maybe for those who are used to living by the flesh. Achievable? Yes! For those who are determined to make it to the end.
