7. For he that is dead is freed from sin.
1 Peter 4:1-5
The beauty of the nature of the believer is that from the day he surrenders his life to Jesus Christ, the spiritual import is that he becomes dead to the flesh which hitherto characterized his life and living, and takes up the life of the resurrected Christ to live, going forward. In essence, since it is impossible for the dead to experience pain, the believer is not susceptible to emotional reactions borne out of the flesh. Rather, he bears all things and continues living in love through Christ Jesus, without allowing offense against anyone.
When Peter became truly born again after having received instruction from the Lord, the man who drew a sword against the arresters of Christ was himself arrested without resistance. He was beaten with strokes of the cane for the sake of the Gospel and received it joyfully; he was told to proceed to the home of a gentile whom he had assumed was common and unclean and should not be related with, to guide the household to salvation and his response was simply “yes, Lord”. Paul the former persecutor of Christ who became an Apostle was slapped in the face by a High Priest whom he knew better than, and it was allowed to pass. In his days of old, he railroaded men to jail without hinderance and stood by watching and urging murderers to go ahead and kill Christ’s faithful followers.
The Lord is saying to us today that to be truly His disciples and followers, we must lay aside every issue of the flesh, take up our cross and follow Him. Every time we resist and fight opposition with physical preparations, we show to the world that we are not broken. To be broken is to be dead, truly to sin. If we be dead, then we can no longer sin. Where a believer continues to sin, then his salvation is suspect. We are therefore enjoined to completely mortify the flesh that the spirit may rule our beings, going forward.
Please pray:
Father, I thank you for giving me the grace to die with you through baptism and to be alive through your resurrection. From this day on, please let me remain completely dead to sin and the flesh as well as all that pertains to the darkness of the world, in Jesus’ name. Do guide me by your light to walk according to your direction in Christ Jesus so that I may only do things that Christ does in me, in Jesus’ name. From this day, I embrace righteousness wholesomely never to stop, in Jesus’ name.
Please share with others. God bless you.
