Focus: Ecclesiastes 12:13 - KJV
13. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Genesis 1: 26-28
The preacher says the whole duty of man is to fear God by obeying His commandments. But where is this drawn from? In the beginning, God spoke the purpose for which He desired to make man. It was that God wanted an image of Himself who would operate in His stead to replenish the earth and dwell in dominion over every other creature, except Himself. And clearly, from Biblical account, when He did make man, He made man’s purpose clear to him from onset and showed man the demarcation line so as to understand in whom the ultimate authority lies. So, man was to fear only God by obeying His commands but be in charge of all others who were meant to fear man and obey him.
Unfortunately, since the days of the first man, failure has been the bane of man regarding the duty he was ascribed to. If Adam feared God, he would have obeyed Him and not his wife regarding the forbidden fruit; if we all do fear God, we would always obey Him and not the voice of the enemy that directs us in a direct opposite direction from the commands of God, including the commandment to obey Christ. For the few that have been in obedience unto God because they fear Him, they have been in true dominion over every other creature whether we want to believe it, or not. When Daniel feared and obeyed God’s commands, lions bowed to him despite his being kept in their domain. When Nebuchadnezzar returned to his senses, feared God and obeyed His commands, he was restored to a throne he abdicated for seven years. It was as if every other thing stood still for him to renew his mind.
The Lord has decided to remind us today of our prime purpose on earth. We were created for God’s sake and nothing else. If we therefore refuse to operate on earth for God, then there is a clear departure from purpose and therefore a colossal failure. To remain in purpose, the Lord expects us to gauge every of our thoughts and actions and determine first whether it is in the fear of God or in consonance with His command before dwelling on the thought or taking the action. Whatever is done without the fear of God or in obedience of His command is done to challenge the authority of God and thereby falls short of purpose or duty. Yet, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
SOLUTION: Put every thought or action to the test of the fear of God through the obedience of His command before actualizing them. When we refuse to do anything that is against the command of God, then shall we be pleasing to Him.
Please pray:
· Let us thank God for preferring us to every other of His creatures. He could have subsumed us under apes or even worms but He did not
· Pray that the Lord will please forgive you in particular for the ways you have paid Him back by desecrating His image with ugliness by your refusal to fear and obey Him
· Tell the Lord you are willing to obey Him henceforth by the help of His Spirit
· Pray that the blessings He promised them that fear Him should be bestowed on you going forward
· Ask for your daily bread for today
