The name of the Lord

Key verse: Psalms 20:1-2

1 The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; 2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

Read: Philippians 2:9-11

After the death and the resurrection of Christ, the most powerful ingredient in prayer is the mention of the name of Jesus Christ. While He walked the face of the earth, knowing what was to come after His death and resurrection, He guided us by saying “hitherto you have asked nothing in my name; ask that your joy may be full”. This suggests that people had been praying without enjoying the full benefit of prayer prior to that time; but once the instrumentality of His name is employed going forward, there will not only be joy but fullness of it. This is so because, upon the fete that He performed for mankind, God exalted His name above every other name in all the realms; so that at the mention of His name all knees bow in all the realms. This suggests that when trouble comes, at the mention of the name of Jesus Christ, whatever is responsible for that trouble and from whatsoever realm it may be operating, must bow its knees to the Master. If they be demons from the realm of the pit, they must bow. If it be operation of angels in response to the request of another being, they bow too for the righteous judge to speak forth.

In other words, when you pray in the name of Jesus, the Lord hears you and listens to your petition. He shields you first from every assault, sends help your way and strengthens you. The name of the Lord is therefore your strong tower as a child of God. Great safety is in it for you. The demons responsible for crippling the beggar at the beautiful gate heard the name of Jesus Christ from the mouth of Peter and bowed hurriedly, releasing their captive. When you employ the name in prayer whether for yourself or another, once you are qualified, it strikes the right chord and the miraculous happens.

Paul was acknowledged as casting out devils in the name of Jesus Christ and the sons of Sceva attempted to do the same but got the beating of their lives in the hands of the demons. Not because the name is not potent; but because it can only be invoked by those who have the righteousness of Christ. You can overcome your current trouble if you will pray in the name of Jesus. But before you do so, please ensure you are born again to forestall greater trouble.

Pray: Father, please let your name avail for me always in prayer in Jesus name.
