Tongue of the learned

Memorize: Isaiah 50:4

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

Read: 1 Samuel 25:4-31

Life and death lie in the power of the tongue. An African adage implies that soft words aid the bringing out of kola from the pouch. Tongues are created of God to aid speech. But not all manner of speech is necessary. Many put their tongues to reckless use and end up drawing calamities to themselves. The fellow who brought tidings to David about the death of Saul and his son assumed he brought good tidings and ascribed unto himself the glory for the fete. His tongue led him to a premature death. Nabal was the owner of his belongings and no one could fault that even though David and his men had guarded them for him at critical times. But there is a way to say no without drawing wrath which Nabal did not learn. That way was vivid to the wife who took so little to David and his men to ward off the calamity that was to befall the household of Nabal.

The ability to utilize the tongue to draw life rather than death is not common to all. Prophet Isaiah makes us to see that we are taught of God every morning, as many as will be attentive to Him. The learned hears from God every morning. My counsel is that we all, like the learned incline our ears to hear from God every morning by studying the Word of God and meditating on it. When we so do, we will learn among other things to refrain from flippancy by bridling our tongues. No one can quote what is not said. Neither can any justifiably hurt you for your unspoken or unacted thoughts. You will also discover that he who keeps his mouth keeps his soul from trouble. The learned uses his tongue only to attract life to himself and others.

One of the ways to use your tongue to ascribe life unto others is by preaching the Gospel to the lost souls. It is a glorious and much more beneficial use of the tongue than to gossip or assassinate the character of others. Repent this day. Stop putting greater burden upon the weary with your tongue; rather use your tongue to bring the weary to ransom and deliverance. That is the mind of God.

Pray:

Father, thank you for daily loading me with benefits through your word. Please help me to keep the tongue you have given me like that of the learned so that I may use it always for life and not destruction in Jesus name.
