Focus: Proverbs 22:9 - KJV
9. He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
2 Corinthians 9:5-11
In the typical ancient African setting, when a father brings forth many children, he trains particularly the first son that he may become “a man”. This means he will become forthright, wealthy and possess some great potency. In turn, the father expects him to look on his younger siblings with bountiful eyes: that is to say, with pity and a view to taking care of them on behalf of the father, until each of them is equally able to stand. This also is the mind of God when He takes a child of His, and endows him with so much bread to eat as well as seed to sow. Unfortunately, rather than sow the seed by looking at his “siblings”, who apparently are poor, with bountiful eye, he rather aggregate both the seed and the bread to himself to the extent that there is so much waste, and he is not bothered about it, to the chagrin of those for whom the seed was meant.
God gave so much seed to Nabal and his household but he failed to have a bountiful eye towards David and his team, who had been kind towards helping to keep his possession safe from violators. In the end, he forfeited his belongings to death and, who knows, since David “inherited” his widow, he could have also inherited his other belongings. With God, when we are with bountiful eye to give to the needy, it operates in the form of a seed that will grow and yield, to the giver, a bountiful harvest in return. No wonder, money seeks and stays with them that put it to use as against the miserly. Hence, it is written: those who sow sparingly shall also reap sparingly and they that sow bountifully shall also reap bountifully. The bountiful eye makes the one privileged to have to sow bountifully into the lives of others and in the end, he reaps bountifully too.
The Lord is enjoining us today to give more bountifully from now on as it is more blessed to give than to receive. But even as giving can be relative, it is the bountiful and cheerful giver that is better rewarded than the ordinary giver. The bountiful giver gives without the expectation of a recompense. When Boaz was being benevolent to Ruth, he did it not with the mind of a recompense but in the end, he gained her. Who knows, our benevolence and bountiful giving may lead us to gaining something we do not have but ought to have and crave for. Take for an instance, a wealthy man who has an infirmity or disease may just through benevolence to some ordinary man, receive insight to the cure of his infirmity. Naaman comes to mind. God works in mysterious ways. Be bountiful eyed.
SOLUTION: We all are agents of God towards succoring the needy. Let us therefore be bountiful in our giving and see what the Lord will do. Please do not give because you think God is coming back to give to you but for loving Him. Yes, He will not fail to give back a bountiful harvest.
Please pray:
· Give thanks to God for being a bountiful giver, that no one can outgive, to you
· Ask God to help you by His Spirit to develop bountiful eye so as to give others who are in need from that which He has committed to your hands
· Ask God to give to you seed in excess that you may be bountiful enough in your giving
· Pray that when the harvest of your bountiful giving is released, you will be alive and well to relish the same
· Ask for your daily bread today
