10. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
1 Timothy 6:17-19
The art of doing good is part of the will of God for believers. It is only those who know how to do good that can do it, for it is impracticable to give what we do not have. Some others do know how to do good but refuse to do it. They block their minds to it and abstain their hands to it. The word of God is that to those ones, it is a sin. All that the Lord expects from us is to do good to all men and not just a few. He is however more particular about them that are of the household of faith as our mission is expected to start from our Jerusalem before it is extended to Judea, and then Samaria, before the uttermost parts of the world. This in no way suggests ignoring a person in need because he is in the uttermost part of the world, or just because he is not from the household of faith.
The testimony of Peter about Jesus Christ to the first crowd he had an opportunity to preach to with the aim of having them believe and receive the good news of the Gospel simply was “how God anointed Jesus with the Holy Ghost and power, who went about doing good….” As much as it was within their powers, the initial Apostles put together a scheme, first to live communally with other members of the household of faith. Thereafter they appointed deacons to serve the tables and ensure that the needs of the people were met. All these aside from their good deeds in taking the Good News to remote places even when there was scarce means of transportation.
The mind of God is for us to seek and do good to all men without fail. It is not enough to be a church goer or member but to reach out to the needy and meet their needs for as much as we can within our also limited resources. When we do so, we fulfil to a large extent, the mandate of God. It cannot be right that we claim we want to be like Christ and ignore the needy around us. To be Christ-like we ought to do better by doing good to all men indiscriminately, and irrespective of what the recipients think about us, ordinarily.
