16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 9:1-8
When Jesus came as the Son of man, He declared to us that while He was in the world, He was the light of the world. His light is derived from the fact that He carries the presence of the father who is light in Himself. As He remained on earth, He made the light to so shine that testimonies abound of His good works. Before He left, He declared unto believers that we are now the light of the world. That we may know the essence of that declaration, He further said, a city set upon a hill cannot be hidden. Meaning that, as the light of the world, we are held up high for our light to shine and not be hidden. In other words, those who refuse to shine their light through good works are like a lit candle put underneath a bushel. No one gains from or takes a beneficial advantage of any such light. Simply put, such light is useless. The light must shine so that others may glorify God.
In one of the ways Christ shone His light, He healed a man sick of the palsy by declaring the forgiveness of his sin. Observers thought He was blasphemous. But when they saw the effect of His declaration, they realized it is the victory of the shining light over darkness and they therefore glorified God. When Peter and John healed the lame man by the beautiful gate of the temple, Peter’s speech thereafter drew three thousand souls to the kingdom of light. When he shined his light, many got attracted by and to it, and in the end, they as well as other observers glorified God even to the extent that the Jewish rulers of the time became scared of them because of the happenings.
The Lord is asking today of the whereabout of the light which He has proclaimed us to be. The major question is why is the light not shining and why is darkness so prevalent in society? It is either that the believers have abdicated the light or that they have kept it under the bushel. It is time to get back to the hilltop and shine the light for all eyes to see and glorify our God. We can begin to shine by emulating Christ through good works. The one who made us the light is asking what we are doing with His investment in us. Like it was in the parable of the talents, He is saying He will soon begin to collect from those who do not have to give to those who have. Let us be therefore intentional in ensuring we make our lights to shine brightly.
