3. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
1 Corinthians 3:7-15, 18
There are many in the body of Christ today, or so they claim, who know they are nothing but pretend before men to be something and are so believed of men and followed. They live a life of deceit unto themselves. The truth is, it is God that ordains in His kingdom and not necessarily the oil that flows from the hands of men. So, God knows them that are His and to what position He has ordained them. Many do gallivant about pretending to be true whereas they keep drawing the name of the Lord into disrepute building upon the foundation that Christ has laid, works that can never withstand the fire in the end. Yet, to them, they are doing the best of works. They even acclaim themselves Apostles; titles that the Lord never gave them.
The one who came last of the Apostles of Christ preferred to remain a fool for Christ in the midst of controversies. When contention came between his followers and those of Apollos, he made it clear that neither himself nor Apollos was anything in the scheme of things. He would rather that the spotlight be turned on God that gave the increase. Not only did he make himself of no mean stature, despite his recognition by the Chief Apostles as the Apostle of God to the non-circumcision, he commended the same to his followers. He knew that it is unto God that we all belong and that it is He that would reward our works in the end. But until then, no one needs to boast of an achievement.
The Lord is reminding us constantly that we are nothing without Him and that only the fool for Christ would excel in the end. They that assume they are something are actually nothing but deceivers of only themselves. For the people know and may hail on because of some benefits they may appear to be currying. The moment the benefits are no longer in sight the one deceiving himself will soon discover how very empty he has been. The position of God therefore, is that we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God and do all things as unto Him.
