No Evil

Focus: 1 Thessalonians 5:15 KJV: "See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men."

The Lord has given us a strict command against retaliation and revenge. When someone hurts or wrongs us, the natural human instinct is to strike back in kind. God breaks that toxic cycle by demanding total restraint: we are never to pay back evil with evil. Instead, we are called to aggressively chase after active goodness, choosing to respond with grace, blessing, and deliberate kindness to everyone—including those who mistreat us.

King Saul was consumed by insane jealousy and hunted David across the wilderness with 3,000 elite soldiers, desperate to murder him, undeservedly. While pursuing David, Saul walked alone into a dark cave to rest—completely unaware that David and his men were hiding in the very back of that exact cave. David’s men urged him to kill Saul, viewing it as a perfect chance to pay back Saul’s evil and claim the throne. But David completely rejected the temptation to render evil for evil. Instead of striking Saul down, he merely cut off a corner of Saul's robe to prove he was close enough to killing him but chose mercy. When Saul left the cave, David bowed before him, spoke with ultimate respect. He broke the cycle of vengeance with pure righteousness.

Not taking revenge is a sign of ultimate spiritual strength, not weakness. When people do evil to you, the enemy wants to manipulate your anger into hitting back. When you leave vengeance in God's hands and actively choose to return hurt with kindness, you rise above your wounds and mirror the perfect heart of Jesus Christ. In Christ, there is no place for darkness at all, which is what causes people to repay evil with evil. The heart of the evildoer is enmeshed in darkness. Avoid it.

Prayer:

Thank you, Lord for showing me the path of your light away from darkness. From this day, give me the grace of patience, temperance and long suffering, so that I may never have the cause to repay evil with evil or render evil in any manner towards anyone. Let my being reflect your character and light throughout my existence, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Please share. God bless you.
