Finding Joy in the Fire

Focus Scripture:

"Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:" — 1 Peter 1:6 (KJV)

Life often feels like a paradox. From our text, it is clear that the reality of the Christian walk is in high-definition joy and heavy-hearted trials co-existing, more often than not.

The "wherein" in the verse refers to our inheritance in Christ—a hope that can't fade or spoil, which is the foundation of our joy. But as for the "now," often times, the "now" is hard. You might be facing "manifold temptations"—a fancy way of saying trials that come in every shape, size, and color.

From this, it is clear that, our current heaviness has an expiration date. It is not our permanent residence; it is a pass-through. Also, the phrase "if need be" suggests that God doesn’t waste our pain. If He allows the fire, it’s because there is gold in us that He wants the world to see. And then, we don’t have to wait for the trial to end to rejoice. We can be heavy-hearted and hopeful at the same time because our future is secure. Job, in all of his trials and persecutions assured himself saying, I know my Redeemer lives and in the end obtained full salvation and was restored in a double fold.

Is there a "heaviness" you are carrying today? Take a moment to remind your soul of the "wherein"—the eternal hope that outlasts this temporary season. His too shall pass.

Prayer:Lord, thank You that my trials are only for a season. When I feel weighed down by manifold temptations, help me to anchor my joy in Your eternal promises rather than my current problems. Give me the strength to endure "if need be," knowing You are refining me. Please let my joy be full, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Please share. God bless you.
