Let Your Yes Be Yes

Focus: James 5:12 - KJV

12. But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

Matthew 5:33-37

Our God is constant. He is who He is yesterday, today and even forever. He is not a man to lie, neither the son of man to repent. When He says something, He stands by it. Where someone represents God to present a position as God’s and another comes (whom God Himself approves and affirms) and says that such is no true representative of God, then there is need to be careful with every other assertion of the said person about God’s position as it should be taken with a pinch of salt. Moses approved on behalf of God, the making of oaths. But then, oaths are necessary where people are wont to lie and perhaps be dissuaded. Those who belong to God cannot lie for by two immutable things by which it is impossible for God to lie, they have a strong consolation as they have fled for refuge from lies and the father of it, to lay hold upon the hope set before them. Hence, when they say yes, they mean yes and need not swear by anything to prove anything to anyone. Christ made this prescription as against Moses’ representation. Should we then believe Moses and not Christ?

What is the necessity to lie? Lying is borne out of the desire to conceal a thing due to the fear of retribution or the like. Where we are sure of the truth of our sayings, we need not call any oath to being to affirm it. Let the unbelievers take it or leave it. Even if we make oath from now till the kingdom comes, those who are determined to hurt us will never affirm our position. They will rather seek occasion to destroy us in the manner of their father the devil, whom Christ called the thief. Let’s critically analyze the life of Christ: He went about doing good. He was healing the sick, delivering the oppressed and raising the dead. Despite all of it, the unbelievers insisted He must die. Why? They claimed He blasphemed God by speaking truth to power about the doctrines of Moses (the fathers, like they fondly say), which if properly interrogated, is not absolutely the true representation of God. Our God is not wicked and cannot be represented in wicked assertions and actions. No! God is Love. All that do not depict love is never representative of His true person. Christ refused to swear or defend Himself in any way other than to ask His accusers: for what do you accuse me – the miracles or the truth which I spoke to you?

Our Lord and our God, please grant us the heart and the courage to always stand for the truth without the fear of what men threaten to do to us for being truthful, in Jesus’ name. Do put the enemy to shame regarding the truth of your word in our mouths in Jesus’ name. You that promised to reward them that diligently seek you, please reward our diligence in searching the truth about you, in Jesus’ name. Let them that stand for the truth never be put to shame, dear Lord, in Jesus’ name. By extension, please expose the lie of the devil to the shame of his agents, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

SOLUTION: No matter the pressure, never give in to lie for any reason. Since you will not lie, you have no basis to convince anyone by oath. Let your yea be yea, no matter what.
