Power Over Enemies

Updated: Mar 22, 2023

Focus: Psalms 44:5-7 - KJV

5. Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. 6. For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. 7. But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

Psalms 44:1-8

The biblical history of the Israelis shows that they are a peculiar people who won battles and wars against their enemies by some supernatural means and not necessarily by their military strength or armor. Though little in size and, at times, formation, they achieved victory by placing reliance in God whom their fathers had believed. How do you explain that even though Lot settled for the seeming choice land, Abraham became better off? Or is it not a wonder that an Isaac became an envy of an entire Philistine nation despite their moves to prevent him from thriving? What should we say about Jacob’s victory over Laban in wealth transfer? Talk about Moses and Pharaoh and the eventual mass burial in the Red Sea. Or is it Joshua’s march around the wall of Jericho and the same falling to the ground? These things appear unbelievable except for the people of faith.

Truth is that, all those who put their hope and reliance in God and not necessarily their individual strength, do always experience remarkable support from Him for His strength is made worthwhile in weakness. No one who believes he is able to save himself is able to maximize the strength of God. David never thought he was able to defeat Goliath except through the strength of the God who helped him with the lion and the bear. Meanwhile, Saul stood there petrified by the threat of Goliath because he didn’t think at all about God who had helped him in battles in times past. Samson failed when he thought by his own strength he would rise again and deal with the Philistines like old times. The way to victory is through the name of the Lord and His own strength, not ours.

Like the Lord did for those who depended on Him in old times, He is willing to push down your enemies and make you tread them under your feet because He loves you and is willing to hold you up in His arms. If we will rely on His name and His strength, whoever is tormenting or trying to hurt us puts himself in real danger, because when the Lord takes our battles over, the enemies get devastated. Things happen to them that they never thought possible. Losing mental soundness like Saul when he rose against David; losing the heir apparent like Pharaoh when he refused to hearken to Moses; and losing their lives and priced treasures just like the Egyptians when they thought the Israelites should not go, are examples of such devastation. We also can start experiencing victory over our enemies if we depend on the power of God and not on our frail nerves or worthless armor.

SOLUTION: It is only when we surrender fully to God in humility that His power becomes available unto us in our battles. Remember that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, and therefore we need special spiritual weapons to be able to overcome. One that is always potent in heaven, on earth and beneath the earth is the name of Jesus Christ. Put it to use always and with boldness.

Please pray thus: Father, I come to you as I am and say I am absolutely vulnerable without you. From today, I put absolute reliance on your power to overcome the enemies of my soul. Let your power push them down under my feet in the name of Jesus’ Christ. Like you did for the people of old, please give me absolute victory over the enemy in Jesus’ name.
