Memorize: 1 John 5:14-15
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
Read: Matthew 26:36-42
When the Lord Jesus Christ taught us to pray, He said to ask that the Will of the Father be done on earth as it is in heaven. Many requests in prayer go undelivered because they are contrary to the Will of God. The Will of God is for the earth to be with purity and love just like it is in heaven. Israel at the time of Eli was drifting into confusion as the sons of Eli were misrepresenting God and maltreating the people. God sought a priest to replace them. Because Hannah, though with a pure heart and contrite spirit, did not seek the will of God, she went to Shiloh regularly to request for a son but got none. Until she aligned her request with the will of God, she was asking to fulfill her lust and therefore got nothing. Jesus Christ the author and finisher of our faith got to the threshold of His purpose. It became too heavy for Him to bear and would rather shed it. He therefore gathered with Him prayer warriors and approached the mountain to avert the will of God in prayer. But alas, God will not yield and He conceded to God. What would have been our lot if God yielded to His request then?
Many times, we seek things from God without checking if it meets with His will. When we don’t get what we seek, rather than check and accept the will of God, we tend to grumble and call God a liar. But God is not a liar. He is a loving and kind father. Who amongst us will freely give a loaded revolver to our school child as toy to play with just because he asked for it? The reason that will not make us approve such request is the same reason God does not release to us some of the things we ask: because it is aimed at hurting us in the end and often, so badly. It is important for the believer to always check his requests in prayer with the will of God. The will of God is laid out in His word.
When we pray, and receive not, it is that we pray amiss and not in accordance with the Will of God. Let us always pray that God’s will be done.
Pray:
Father, I present to you this day, all of my needs. You are the great provider, my God and helper. Please meet me at the point of my needs according to your will in Jesus name.
