Rod For The Transgressor

Focus: Psalms 89:32 - KJV

32. Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

Psalms 89:19-37

Our God is a disciplinarian. He chastises those whom He loves to ensure they are corrected to return to the right track. Hence, when a believer goes into iniquity, rather than leave or forsake him, the Lord chastises him with the rod and stripes for his back for his iniquity. It is not the way of the Lord to leave a straying child of His, uncorrected. Like a good Shepherd that He is, His rod and staff, are used for the redirecting of the erring child. When the rod and staff are employed, it is not always palatable but once employed, the child comes eventually to the realization of himself, and the child of whom he is.

David messed up big time. The Lord told him how he could not hide from Him what he did in hiding with Bathsheba and with smartness, to Urriah. The Lord came down on him with his rod of punishment and it caused David to repent. Upon his repentance, the Lord entered into a covenant with him to keep him in dynasty in Israel and whenever anyone in his lineage misbehaved towards the Lord, the same would be chastened but not forsaken. Not everyone has received such grace of a covenant.

God is saying to us that He knows our frailty that we delve into iniquity from time to time but that as He has promised not to leave or forsake us, He would not spare the rod in our iniquity, so as to help us return to track. He is however warning that in chastisement we should abstain from being stiff-necked. Let us therefore, not take the Lord’s chastening as punishment but correction.
