11. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
2 Timothy 4:9-12
Many have been deceived into believing that from the time they got born again, since their salvation is by grace and not by their works, they have no need for good works since they are already saved. The truth is that Jesus bore their past sins and died for it to restore them to the cleanliness of the initial Adam before the fall; but that like Christ and living by Him, they begin to exhibit good works that make them righteous as against the said Adam who went into unrighteousness. If it were not necessary, the Lord and His disciples would not have insisted that we deny ungodliness and worldly lusts.
Paul was particular about being forsaken by Demas. On the other hand, he stated that only Luke was with him and further requested that Mark be brought along for he was profitable to the Gospel. He spoke of Tychicus whom he had sent on an errand. This simply points to the fact that while Demas was open to worldly lusts, the trio of Luke, Mark and Tychicus were reserved unto good works. If they had also been lustful, he would not have spared them. He particularly warned Timothy about one Alexander the coppersmith. If it was good to do evil upon salvation, there would not have been need to complain about it.
God is saying to us that He is true and would not deny Himself. We are the ones to beware of the doctrines we imbibe and act upon. The fact that anyone is deceived does not withhold judgment. Ask Eve. Hence, we are to guard our hearts and minds jealously and with all diligence so as not to allow deceit to thrive therein which may lead us into damnation. For those who had been deceived, it is not too late to turn around. Perhaps the reason the Lord has kept them till today is this: that they may clear their minds and hearts of the deception that is pushing them towards perdition.
