Seek Guidance

Focus: 1 Samuel 30:8 - KJV

8. And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

1 Samuel 23:1-5

David was successful a man because he was a man given to getting guidance from the best source before taking steps that informed his living and livelihood. In most homes and societies, people do engage the gear of their actions before that of their brains. In the end, the actions bring them to hitting the rock because they are not well thought through. There are others who will rather get guidance from those who are more experienced in what they are confronting before taking steps to act. However, the experience of some in the things they seek to advise upon, is never adequate. There is one who is the most experienced in all aspects of life because He was there from the beginning and is actually the beginning and nothing happened or can happen without His knowledge. That is the Almighty God Himself. When He guides, we cannot fail.

David was a good example of seeking guidance from God. If God tells us to do something despite the obstacles that are glaring, we ought to rest assured that He knows the way to our victory, like it happened for David in the matter of Keilah, when the Philistines invaded it. Unfortunately, his grandson, Rehoboam appeared not to have taken any lesson from David when it comes to guidance. Rather than consult the Lord, he consulted elders and subsequently his contemporaries, on the way to go in his administration. Based on the conflicting opinions he got, he was somewhat confused and assumed the elders were old school and did not understand modern governance. Hence, he followed the guidance of his contemporaries and failed for it. David never failed because, no matter what the elders or contemporaries said, the directive of God took precedent in his affairs. Those who turn deaf ears to God’s guidance and decide to do things their way, always have themselves to blame in the end.

The Lord wants us to know that He is always available to those who would live life according to His commands. Where there are no commands from Him, there is nothing to live by. Hence, He makes Himself available to give loving commands which at the beginning may appear absurd since His ways are not our ways. No matter how unrealistic the Lord’s guidance can be, it is always the best solution for the bearer. When Rehoboam lost ten tribes of Israel to Jeroboam, he thought to wage war and reclaim it. Thank God he listened to guidance not to even dare it; he would perhaps have lost his head in the process. Where there are issues confronting us that we need to act on, it is imperative to seek the view of the most experienced being that there is, who is the Creator Himself. He has bestowed on us His Spirit to guide us now, better than they got in the days of David.

SOLUTION: Seek the view of the Holy Spirit that dwells in you before you take steps in life. Check to be sure that the voice you have heard is of the Holy Spirit and not that of a stranger. Every guidance from the Holy Spirit is never antagonistic of the written word of God. Once it is in tandem with the word, hold it firm and act on it.
