The Unmistakable Mark of Christ

Focus: Acts 4:13 (KJV): "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus."

The ultimate credential for spiritual power and unstoppable impact is not human pedigree or academic status, but an intimate, personal history with Jesus Christ. Boldness as used here, translates to an unshakeable, outspoken courage under extreme pressure. Peter and John were standing on trial before the Sanhedrin—the same powerful, highly educated religious court that had successfully orchestrated the crucifixion of Jesus just weeks prior. The elite judges expected these two Galilean fishermen to be terrified, stuttering, and deeply intimidated. Instead, they spoke with brilliant theological clarity and absolute authority. The religious leaders sneered at them as "unlearned and ignorant"—phrases meaning they lacked formal rabbinical training and were ordinary citizens. Yet, they could not deny the supernatural authority pouring out of them. The court had to arrive at the only logical conclusion: these ordinary men carried an extraordinary weight because they had spent real time inside the presence of Jesus.

Humanly speaking, Peter and John had zero political or religious backing. Weeks earlier, their lack of credentials made them fragile. When Jesus was arrested, Peter was so paralyzed by fear that he repeatedly cursed and denied even knowing Jesus to a servant girl. They hid behind locked doors out of sheer terror of the very leaders they were now facing. What changed? Two massive things occurred: they witnessed the resurrection of Jesus, and they were completely filled with the Holy Spirit. When Peter stood up to preach afterwards, he didn't quote human philosophers or rely on professional speaking tactics. He simply spoke the words of Christ with the power of the Spirit. The elite court was totally stunned. The disciples' raw, supernatural confidence became a walking advertisement for the reality of a risen Savior. Their lives proved that God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called through His presence.

Stop letting your perceived limitations—whether it is a lack of theological training, a simple background, or past failures—keep you from speaking up for God. Your adequacy comes from Him, not a degree. If you want public boldness, you must invest in private intimacy. Spend uninterrupted time with Jesus today in prayer and in His Word until His character begins to rub off on your speech and attitude. When people at work, school, or in your family look at your life, give them something to marvel at. Let your integrity, your peace during a crisis, and your kindness be so distinct that they are forced to recognize "you have been with Jesus."

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you that you use the weak things of this world to confound the wise. Forgive me for relying on my own intellect, background, or social status to feel confident. I ask that you would fill me with the same Holy Spirit boldness that Peter and John possessed. Let my life be so transformed by your presence that even my critics will look at me and take knowledge that I have been with Jesus. Deliver me from the fear of man today, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Please share. God bless you.
