Treat God as God!

Key verse: Exodus 20:5

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Exodus 20:3-7

God is Supreme. He is in a class of His own. He has no contemporary, neither has He a classmate. It is therefore demeaning for us to equate Him with any seen or known creature in any of the realms. It is insulting to God for Him to be looked upon as a craft, wood, iron even the sun or stars or any past deity or what have you. These things or beings are His making. Equating Him with any or all of them is reducing His standing to that of a mere creature. Worse still, setting God aside to worship any of His creatures brings Him to jealousy. Ironically, the reason people do these things is for lack of knowledge. Incidentally, many who so do assume they know but know not.

It is important for us to understand however that it is not until we put stones, iron, wood or craft down or image which we bow to that we sin against God in this matter. Some have other men as their gods. The one you give priority or greater reference to in your life over God is your god. If your pursuit is all about money, or power or influence more than the focus you place on God, then the same is your god. Some have had real pressure before getting married or having children and therefore give greater reverence to the spouse or child than God. A pastor once insisted that unless a minister was assigned to him, he was not ready to pastor a parish. The supposed minister was a bit in money at the time. The senior pastor quipped and said: “think again before you chose: it is the Holy Spirit you need and not any man”. Yet that pastor insisted on the said minister. His request was granted him. Not long after the two of them fought bitterly and irreconcilably that they had to part ways.

Are you also bringing God low in the affairs of your life and you are wondering why life is not so beautiful? God is jealous and indeed, His name is Jealous. He commands that we have no other god besides Him. Do away with everything that comes into priority before God in your life. They are depriving you of your benefit in God. Didn’t Christ say if we love father or mother or wife or child more than Himself, we are not fit to be His disciple?

Pray: Father, help me to love you above every other being so that only you will remain the God of my life forever in Jesus name.
