Vessels Unto Honor

Focus: 2 Timothy 2:20-21 - KJV

20. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

2 Timothy 2:15-21

In Paul’s second letter to Timothy, he made some expositions that are quite insightful. By him, we are to avoid false teachings that eat like cancer. Such teachings are erroneous concerning the truth. Nonetheless, it is possible to view the vessel through whom the teachings are emanating and assume they are teachings that are true. If we make the mistake of receiving erroneous teachings unto ourselves, God is not deceived. His foundation stands sure in that He knows those who are His. We are the ones to be careful what we imbibe and those we take them from. For there are vessels and there are vessels. Some are golden while others are silver, wooden or made of earth. Of these, some are unto honor and others unto dishonor. Those that are unto honor are meet for the Master’s use. There is the tendency to assume that only the golden vessels are meet for the Master’s use. Not all the time. There are golden potties or toilet seats. As beautiful as they may appear, they cannot be used to serve the Master tea on the table. Hence, they are not meet for the Master’s use in the circumstance. Conversely, there are wooden spoons used for cooking certain delicacies. Though wooden, they are still honorable and meet for the Master’s use. In our case, we are not to judge the vessel by its appearance but by its function whether or not it honors the Master. For instance, in the house of Jesse, Eliab appeared to Samuel golden but he was not meet for the use of God. On the other hand, it was David who was more like an earthly vessel that God considered meet for His use. Question is: what is that vessel producing – the truth or falsehood?

Beloved, the end times are here and there are many fake disciples all over the world. Many are railroading the flock that are meant for the kingdom into darkness by their teachings and waywardness. The admonition of Paul to us is clear: we are to study the word of God effectively that we may be able to decipher what is true and what is not. Many seemingly golden vessels may actually be unto dishonor. If we choose them based on their appearance, they may lead us into error. More importantly, by studying and properly dividing the word of truth, we ourselves present ourselves as vessels unto honor meet for the Master’s use.

SOLUTION: Imbibe the word of God; divide it rightly unto others; shun profane and vain babblings as they increase into more ungodliness. Instead humble yourself to study at the feet of Jesus and get inspired by the Holy Spirit always.

Father, we want to be meet for your use. Do please sanctify us with your word in the name of Jesus Christ. Give us the Spirit to discern those vessels that are not unto honor unto you that we may not fall into error of receiving their profaned meat that comes in the form of a teaching of your word in Jesus’ name. In all we do, let your name always be glorified even as we serve you in Jesus’ name.
