Watch those idle words

Key verse: Matthew 12:36

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

2 Samuel 16:5-8

Idle words are vain words or words not turned to normal or appropriate use, lacking support or evident lawful basis. Every day of life, there are people who engage in gossip and lie about their fellow beings just to gain relevance and status by putting down the concerned person. Some even go to the extent of mocking and judgmentally mocking some afflicted people of God while passing through trials. They fail to understand that God is a God of vengeance and whatsoever a man sows the same will he reap. Even if they do not reap the fruit of that which they do in the present world, they are bound to give account when they come to judgment before God.

David had a fair share of trouble in his kingship. Although he was not responsible for the deposition of Saul, the house of Saul erroneously believed the king was deposed because of David. So, when Absalom, David’s son decided to topple him, someone from the household of Saul reined curses on David in his pain and flight calling him a bloody man and making it sound like he was responsible for the calamity that befell the house of Saul. Even though David had capacity to end his life right there and then, he refrained from doing so and left him to the judgment of God. The culprit Shimei was executed for this sin eventually by king Solomon. The people of God you insult in pain has the authority of God to condemn your tongue even if they don’t because they are Christ-like. When a tongue is condemned, it brings forth only noise like the voice of the dumb and is no longer coherent. Why put yourself in such danger of rebuke? As they have so refused to condemn, don’t you think they have left your deeds for God to judge? Yet, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Beloved, please eschew vain words in your daily living. Let no one draw you to pass comments unverified. Let us please keep our mouths so that we can keep our souls from trouble. Watch what you say. God has record of all we say. If man can invent recorders that plays back the words of men and CCTV that plays back their moves, how much more God that created him?

Pray: Father, I am sorry for the idle words I have said in the past. Please forgive me. Help me to keep my mouth from vain words from now never to offend again in Jesus name.
